  1. Sorry it took a couple days to get back... FM Server 5, version v2. ( I plan to back-up, and install the v4 updater next holiday when I have some "down time".. this is at a school, so school holidays are fairly regular...) It is running from an iMac (G3/CRT model) DV 450. Any insight appreciated! Paul F.
  2. I finally figured out WHAT was causing a persistant problem I was having; Configuration: 30 user network of FM 6 (mixed OS X and OS 9 clients). FM Server 5 on OS X (10.3.5). Serving 25 files. What would probably be considered "very light" traffic. What was happening; The server would "mysteriously" just STOP... Open the config app, click start, and away it goes... but then after a day,or two, or three (seldom longer).. it would just stop again. What I finally figured out.. The log shows that the last 3 times it "just stopped" happened to be RIGHT after a backup schedule finished running. The last entry in the log is "backup schedule complete". So my question is; WHY, and how do I make it STOP, er, stopping? Thanks in advance! Paul F.
  3. Others here know way more than I do... But PART of your question I can answer; You can "Host" files with Filemaker Pro (non-server) to a limited number of simultaneos clients... 5 I beleive. FM Server will serve up the files to more than 5 clients at a time. You can "test out" your shared database by making them "Multi-User", and access the file by going "Open Remote" from another machine. Hope this helps!
  4. Thanks folks! That's going to make moving my site to OS X (requiring FM6) a LOT more endurable and cheaper! Paul F.
  5. I'm at what sounds like about your level with Filemaker... I have a "small" FileMaker system with about 20 files, and somewhat fewer records.. I moved Filemaker from an older Mac (a Beige G3) to a newer one, an "old model" iMac. The iMac has a faster HD (it's a 5400rpm, but the old one was a slower interface) and it has 10/100 Ethernet whereas the G3 had 10Base-T. Access to the data sped up about 50%. Can't say for sure WHAT sped it up, but take that for what you will... Get a 7200rpm drive with a big cache, make sure you have a 10/100 or 100Base-T network, make sure you have "enough" RAM. Maybe someone more experienced than I can be more specific..... Paul F.
  6. I'm a school "tech guy", and we have a school wide database.. Most of our "client" machines (all Macs) are running FM5.0. I'm beginning to upgrade some machines to OS X, and want to use the OS X native FM 6. However, we can't afford to move to FM6 for ALL machines at once. Here's my question; Can I develop (that is, change layouts, fields etc) a database on FM 6, to be served by our Filemaker Server to CLIENTS running Filemaker 5 AND Filemaker 6? I would not be utilizing any features that 6 has over 5 (that I am aware of) until we've COMPLETELY moved to FM6 in a year (maybe two... depends on budget...). For reference, I'm talking about a K-8 school, with about 30 client machines and a database of 15 files with around 450 students (with about that many records)... I'd sure appreciate it if someone knows this one! I've been through the Tech archives at Filemaker and either the question isn't addressed, or I'm "Search Incompetant"... Thanks! Paul F.
