  1. In reply to Matt Klein's comments - yes totally infuriating after so long. And with all that FMP is capable of, it's a poor excuse to suggest that FMP is not a reporting tool. If some reporting is possible then whatever is possible should at least work properly! And to add - I'm working on a file at the moment - the first in FMP7 that I've confronted that old problem again - and it not only doesn't review correctly but also does NOT print correctly either (FMP7 on MacOSX). For a moment I had hopes, but.......
  2. To Soren Dyhr - thanks for the file. Nice idea. But it appears that your solution will only work if the filed lables are the same (in my case the field labels are very different) - or am I missing something?
  3. Yes you had me going there for a minute too (as the original questioner). Thanks to all for the info from all - I can see the simple answer to my original question is a resounding 'no'. But there are some other places to go - as the various files suggest. That last one (from BruceR) sure is elaborate! - I'm still figuring. But they've given me plenty food for thought. thanks
  4. This is not really necessary, but I'd like to know if it can be done.... Can a portal's relationship (ie: what table it's related to) be changed dynamically - by a value list for instance. I have a multi-table db and am using the portals to display info only (data entry is via other layouts) from various tables. I have several portals on the one layout displaying info from various parts of the db - this takes more room than I'd like, and it would be good to have one location (one portal) displaying info from various tables.. Obviously I can't have the portals stacked on top of each other - but if I use only one portal, can the relationship of the single portal be changed dynamically to reflect the various tables being accessed? The setup I have is running just fine as is - but I'd be intrigued to know if this can be done.
  5. Carlyle - I always feel like an idiot here asking some of the things I can't work out. But folks are pretty kind, -) Seems it depends on the version of Excel (not Filemaker). That menu command ('Import from Filemaker') only seems to be in Office 2004. Never saw it in earlier versions. But the real point is that it only will import FMP6 (maybe earlier versions?) and can't even see the FMP7 files. I haven't checked yet, but there may be a MS patch for Excel to solve it. I was just wondering if any other FMP folks had run into this problem.
  6. Simple question - but I can't find the answer anywhere. The error function for a record not found is 401. But if no entry is made in any fields in a search, 401 doesn't pick it up. What's the error for this situation? thanks in advance
  7. Using previous FMP versiion (6), I was able to use the 'Import from FMP' menu command within Excel to import records from FMP. This was easier than exporting from FMP to Excel. Having moved to FMP7, I now find Excel doesn't recognise FMP7 files. Anyone know anything about this? (On Mac, FMP7 and Excel2004)
  8. To CobaltSky I did try your method and it works just fine - but, after I found I couldn't find how to pass the window details as a script parameter (groan), I made it work by creating a new window and re-naming the original, and then all the rest of your suggestion - then re-naming the search window back to the original name. Works fine with almost no flicker. So I'm a bit puzzled at the need to pass window details as scriptpara - let alone how to do it! :-)
  9. thanks - but that only works if the user has clicked outside the field. I want a way so that at the moment of entering new data a warning is generated. At the moment I'm using the field also set as a button firing a script that checks against a calc field for any changes. Works okay - but requires two clicks into the field (I can't work out why yet).... so it's all a bit clunky.
  10. I want to check that once a new record is created and a particular field ('Events') is entered into, that if subsequently 'Events' is altered (but still contains text), that a warning message is displayed. Can't figure how to check for modification of field and give message (or bar it if necessary) Grateful for any help
  11. To CobaltSky and The Otter thanks for all that - I like the lateral approach of not using the GTRR at all - but I'll experiment with both. That was a great help. thanks again cheers Michael
  12. Ah.... I wrote all that before getting your last reply. What you say sounds logical - I'll give it a go. Wouls you have a suggestion as to the simplest method of capturing the records? I thought my script was too breathtakingly simple to be true! -) thanks again Michael
  13. Here's the actual script: (The table is 'Events' and all layouts are within this table) New Window (name "search window" height etc...) Go to Layout "Search" (from table 'Events") Enter Find mode (pause) Perform Find () Go To Related Record (from table "Events"; Using layout 'List events' (Events)) ((show only related records) not selected) Close Window (current window) Go to layout ("List Events' (Events)) Exit script What am I doing wrong? thanks again Michael
  14. thanks for the reply Sorry - that was a typo - the GTRR scripts step was BEFORE the close window..... but it still doesn't work.
  15. To Cobaltsky not sure if Craig was able to get your advice on GTRR mathod to work - but I couldn't! Tried various combos but just couldn't make it work. I have pop-up window from one table - want to get found set in PUW to end up in original window (same table). Script New window (size etc) enter find(pause) perform find close window GTRR (from Table 'xx' to layout 'yy' in Table 'xx') Obviously I'm missing something basic - and critical! Any help gratefully recieved thanks Michael
