  1. Hi, thanks for helping me out on this little problem. I have a server running a regular version of FM 7, I then share it with the other networked computers, and share the data from the file open on the server. When the networked computers are using the database, they sometimes pull information from other FM databases on the server. If the databases are already open on the server, then everything works fine, but if the server only has the shared database open, and not the databases that the original reaches out to, I get error messages on the networked computers. Is there a way to allow the networked computers to use the open database, and have it reach out to the other databases without them being actively open on the server? Thanks so much -Steve
  2. Solved it! Turns out the /c executes the commands that follows, then closes the windows. Taking away the /c stops the following commands from being executed. A /k will cause the window to remainl, and it will execute the commands. I was removing the /c thinking that it would still execute the commands, but leave the window open! thanks again Ted! -Steve
  3. FYI. When I go to the run command in windows XP, if I type cmd md c:11, the wondows opens, but nothing again is entered into the window. Is it possible that filemaker is roing its job, but windows isn't accepting the extra commands, only the cmd command??? Thanks -Steve
  4. OK, I solved the backslash and quotes problem, I just added another backslash and it works fine, but for some reason, I am getting the ms-dos windows opening, but the event that I am sending isnt appearing on the scrren... When I manually type it its fine, but I cant get filemaker to "send" the info to the MS-D0s screen... Any advice? -Steve
  5. Hi Ted, you've helped me out before, I thank you for your generosity. I'm having a problem with the script info that you gave me when I enter "cmd md c:"Patient List::id number into the calculated field value for assignment to global, I get an error, THE TEXT CONSTANT DOES NOT END WITH A QOUTOATION MARK. I'll play around with it, but it doesn't like the quotes I guess..... Thanks again -Steve
  6. Hi, I am trying to create a folder in windows based on a field name. I have a unique ID number for every record, and I am trying to create a folder that is named the ID number. I have my script set up, but everytime filemaker opens a MS-DOS CMD window, the rest of my script doesn't get typed out to create the folder. Here is my script: Enter Browse Mode [] Set Field [patientlist::Global; "cmd c/ md c:testfolder" Set Event["aevt";"odoc";Patientlist::Global The MS-DOS window opens, but the "md c:testfolder" never appears in the ms-dos window. If I manually type it into the ms-dos window, it works fine. Ultimately, I would like to replace the testfolder with a field name (unique identifier), so every record will have a folder with the same name as the unique identifier, then I can access that folder by having filemaker open the folder using the field name. However, I can't figure out how to have filemaker replace the "testfolder" with a field name. I keep getting a quotation error in scriptmaker. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! -Steve
  7. Hoping to get help one more time regarding this issue. I am using a date in the calculations of a script and I cant get it to show the date as "4-23-2005", it always shows it as "4/23/2005", which cannot be part of a windows forder becasue of the slashes. I have gone into the date settings of the date field involved in the calculation, and I have changed it to the "4-23-2005" format, but the script still puts the old format in the field. Any Ideas? Thanks -Steve
  8. Thanks Guys, I have tried deleting the quotes and scriptmaker prevented me from saving the script becasue it was expecting an end quote. I will try playing around with it some more and I will remove the cmd/ c stuff. thanks again! -Steve
  9. Hi, I am having a problem with this... I wish to open a folder in MS windows with the "send event" command. The following script shows my attempt to open a folder who's name is a fieldname. No matter what I do, scriptmaker always reads the field name as a text, not at the contents of the fild. Enter Browse Mode [] Set Field [GLOBALFIELD; "cmd /c explorer c:FIELD_NAME"] Send Event [aevt";"odoc";GLOBALFIELD] When I run this script, the command is sent to windows, but it tells me that "The path 'c:GLOBALFIELD' does not exist or is not a directory" Can anyone see what I am doing wrong and how this can be changed to open the folder that is call what GLOBALFIELD contains? Thanks so much! -Steve
  10. Excellent Idea! That should do the trick. I thought I would have to use counters, but I will try this out, I'm sure it will work, thanks to both Queue and Transpower for your help! Probably saved me hours upon hours. -Steve
  11. Thanks, I did set up a self-relationship, and I did sort the 2nd table by the date, and when I look at a record, I can view the field from the table 2, but it is always showing the data from the most recent record, and I would like to see the data from the previous record, when sorted by date. Record 1 6/10/2000 Record 2 7/10/2000 Record 3 8/10/2000 When I view record 3, I would like to be able to show certain data from record 2, and when I view record 2, I would like to see data from record 1. Thanks again for you help, I am a novice, bay am learning fast that Filemaker is a very underappreciated database! Thanks -Steve
  12. Thanks for helping out.... I have a series of records, one of the fields being the date the record was entered. I would like to show fields from the previous record, or, the second to most recent record. So when I am looking at a record, I would like to see some data from a field from the last record entered, the second to last date. I have my layout currently set with a portal to show the field, but when I sort, I sort in a decending manner, and it shows me the information for the current record that I am in because that is the most recent field, so I am hoping that it is possible to sort decending in a portal, while skipping the most recent record and show the second most recent record in the portal. Thanks so much! -Steve
  13. Sorry for my poor explanation of what is happening. I am using scripts, and was not aware of a way to check to see if there are any related records in another dattabase. If I can do that, that would solve my problem. After I read your response, I am exploring the use of portals, which may solve my problem entirely. Thanks So much!!
  14. Thanks for helping out! First post, so here goes... Using a list of contacts with a unique identifier, I also have other databases that have some of the contacts present in them, having the same unique identifier. The relationships are set through the serial number (unique Identifier). From the contact database, which has all the contacts, when I ask filemaker to grab and display some information from the other database, it works fine, but only when the other database has a contact with the unique identifier. If there is no contact with the unique identifier from the first database, filemaker displays the last record that I was viewing. So when there is a record with the same identifier in the second databse, no problem, but when there isn't, it displays the info from the last record that I was looking at. Is there a way I can have filemaker show me a window like "no record found", or a way to have filemaker fill in all the gaps in the serial numbers of the second database with black fields, or "no contact found" showing in a field. Thanks. I;ve been pulling my hair out for a few days over this. I'm an amateur, and this has me stumped. Thanks -Steve
