  1. I have a VPN where a central computer in one location connects to a number of stores periodically every day and needs to close all files from one location so it can connect to the next location. It is also a problem when the sites log onto a specific file at the head office to look up some info and I want them to close it as they leave that particular layout as sometimes the VPN fails and they end up showing 'file missing' on that layout when they come back to it, whereas if they were able to only open it when they need to see it and close it 'behind them' it minimises such problems..
  2. Hi there I'm having trouble after migrating to FM8 from FM5 where i can't seem to be able to tell it to close certain files that are open in the background once they were opened once. Example is when I go to a particular layout in database X that calls on another database to open say database Y, and even if i go out of that layout in db X to another one that doesn't require db Y, I still can't get FM to close db Y. There are no other files open that I can see that require db Y but I can't get it to close it!! what can i do? am i missing something??
  3. how can i restrict it from opening more than one window of the same file at the same time? is it a setting somewhere?
  4. Hi All I have a problem with FM8 that when it's used as a host (i.e. without Filemaker server) it often opens up several windows of the same file at the same time which causes problems trying to modify records in one window as another one is open.. it has also caused me problems running scripts where a search is made in one window and another file is meant to import that data and ends up importing ALL records in the file - which i think is happening because it's importing from the other window of that same database where the search is not performed.. I can't understand why they added that feature in the first place, it has only caused me grief so far, I can't see the benefit frankly.. what am i missing?! thanks for the help anyway..
  5. what are the specs of your new ones?
  6. Hi all I have just upgraded my entire network to work on FM8. It is now 10 pc's: Win XP, 1.8 GHz, 512 MB ram + 3 eMac's: OSX 700MHz processors,384 MB memory and a G4 server as the FM8 server. the pc's are running much faster than the macs.. I thought it would be the other way round.. is it the ram? what is the most determining factor in the speed of a guest on FM8??
  7. Hi there, i'm a first time user of this forum, i've looked through the topics to check if someone else has already posted this topic but I can't see it anywhere, so excuse me if I am duplicating a topic here.. my problem is that i had all my databases developed and running on FM5 up until recently when I changed over to FM8. I have the main access to all the databases, but when I am on a record in one of the databases and someone else on the network is trying to access that recrod it comes up with the usual message that I am already on that record but it also adds MY PASSWORD to that message!! e.g. 'T [1234] is already modifying this record', with 1234 (for example) being my password .. how can i stop that??? help!!
