I had read the licence agreement and it does say that I can install a second copy on a laptop. However it does not say that I can have two copies activated at the same time, and that was the subject of my question. As you say, this question has no doubt been raised before, but my searches did not uncover any clear answer. That was what I was trying to determine.
As it turned out, I decided to try it and see, and it seems to have worked. So, for the record, it seems that the licence terms allow you to have a copy activated on a laptop as well as a copy activated on your principal desktop machine. I really appreciate this capability - it supports my reasonable use of the software while I am working in my office and also while commuting.
