In layout mode, footer line will move up just so far manually, leaving about a 0.75 inch gap to fields and labels. Above - only fields, field labels and three words near top of body. I looked for a stray period or small entry, but did not find.

Any ideas?

It’s not clear to me what you are trying to accomplish.

Why not attach a screen shot of your layout?

What theme are you using?

I found my problem. There was a very thin (1 pixel wide?) rectangle at the right hand border of the layout, which extended down into the footer.

Select, Delete. Problem solved.

That's the usual reason.  It helps me sometimes in layout mode to zoom in and select all to find those little outlined cast away parts.
