why does my screen go black

I'm using filemaker7 on a windows 10 machine. when I'm in layout mode and click on an on a object the screen goes black. I had this problem before using XP and forgot how to solve it. does anyone know what i need to do? thanks for any advice you can give with this problem.

I'm surprised it runs at all - FileMaker 7 was released 13 years ago...

I really would consider moving to a more modern version of FileMaker...
