Anecdotal evidence suggests that File Sharing leads to increases in instability.

In addition if File Sharing is turned on, this would lead to actually sharing some or all files on the drives and this will degrade performance of the machine.

Lastly it leads to the possible security violations in that it would be possible for someone to intentionally or inadvertantly mess around with the database files in ways that are not intended.

A database server is NOT a file server, there is no good reason to share files on it, so just do not do it.

Saw this problem in the last 6 months or so at Mad Macs, a local mac vendor. They use FM 3 server on a Mac 7500 running System 8.1. This should be REEEEALY stable and had been for years. All of a sudden they were having terrible problems with crashing. You guessed it, file sharing got turned on. Turned it off, problem disappeared.

Just in case you want worse stability than with file sharing turned on, also put only one client copy of FM on the server (no FM Sever and remove FM from the other computers), program linking on and let everyone open the FM files on the server by navigating to the shared volume and double clicking the files. I suppose you could also dump in some metal shavings and plug up the air vents on the server machine, but this should do it.
