Finding Two Criteria from One Record in Portal

I have two related databases, one is the main or "contact" database, and the other holds records of donations sent to our organization. Each contact can have numerous donations attributed to them. If I want to find the number of donors and not the number of gifts in a fiscal year, I use a portal from the contacts database so it eliminates the possibility of duplication, since people can give more than once per year.

My problem, is that people's gifts can be coded differently. For example, two gifts from one person can come from themselves, or their family foundation, or their company, etc. So, if I do a find in the portal for "individual" donations in "2001" fiscal year, File Maker searches for all related individual records, then all donations in 2001 fiscal year. What happens is that John Doe could have made a gift through his "foundation" in 2002, but made a gift as an "individual" the previous year, so his Contact record still comes up.

Is there a way where I can perform this find so instead of searching each field separately, it searches both fields according to its related record? I don't want to create new Contact records for each persons business or family foundation when it is not needed.

My portal field is a window that contains six fields from related records, they are:

Date Received, Amount, Category, Designation, Fiscal Year, Appeal

I am performing a find in the Category and Fiscal Year fields.

Each Field has a Value List Assigned To It.

Category Value List:

Individual

Foundation

Corporation

Assoc/Organization

CIND

FIND

Fiscal Year Value List:

1996-97

1997-98

1998-99

1999-00

2000-01

2001-02

I am doing a find for Catgory Field: Individual, Fiscal Year Field: 2000-01, through the portal.

This brings up all the contact records who have ever given as an individual and also made a gift in 2000-01. What I want is the contact records who have given as an indivual in 2000-01. So I want to eliminate John Doe, who gave as a CIND in 2000-01, but as an indivual in 2000-02.
