Migrating from QB Desktop to QB Online

Recommended Posts

  • Newbies

Have a client using FM Books Connector 12.0.0.7 with local Quickbooks Premiere Plus Pro Services Edition 2022 about to migrate to QB Online and FM Books Connector Online. We are push/pulling companies/invoices. Some questions:

1) Should we upgrade to FM Books 12.0.0.8 first?

2) What are the functional differences between the 2 versions of FM Books Connector? Is there a matrix of functions compatible/not compatible? How dramatic are the FM scripting changes needed?

Basically looking for a guide for implementation (if available) but also to get some direct feedback from someone who has already done this to find best practice and possible issues.

Thank you.

Hi David,

I will answer your questions in order:

1) Should we upgrade to FM Books 12.0.0.8 first?

It is recommended to stay updated if you can. You can get a fresh copy of the new update from the product page below under "download our plug-in demo". You can also see the update history if you scroll all the way down. This shows what updates were made for each version. We also have a newsletter that will notify users of any updates for our plug-ins.

2) What are the functional differences between the 2 versions of FM Books Connector? Is there a matrix of functions compatible/not compatible? How dramatic are the FM scripting changes needed?

The FM Books Connector desktop and online are completely different depending on the version you're using. The online version uses an API to connect to Intuit's account instead of the desktop which connects to the company file. The scripting is also different and you can see this if you have both versions of the demo file and looking at the script workspace.

You can also look at the developer's guide for both versions to see the differences in scripting.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach us at [email protected]. You are also free to test both versions using the demo files.

Thank you for your help. A few more-

1) I take it from your response there is not a specific migration guide/best practices from QB Desktop to QB Online besides what is contained int he Dev Guides?

2) Is there any functional difference between the Mac/Windows version of the plugin, besides the obvious OS navigation? The client only has one PC in order to run QB desktop and would be happy to scrap it.

Thanks.

Hi David,

The Developer's guide has info on the inside of the plug-ins (ie. What scripts do, how they are formatted, how connecting the plug-in to Quickbooks, etc).

When it comes to migration, we do have a migration guide for FM Books Connector Online. You can find this guide in the help center.

When it comes to functional differences between Mac and Windows, the FM Books Connector Desktop is Windows only, but the online version works for both Windows and Mac. Other than that, both versions have the same function apart from the Mac version having different security to work with Mac security.

Thank you!
