Newbies joshthomas Posted September 4, 2002 Newbies Posted September 4, 2002 Our company uses FMPro 4.x on both Win2K and Mac OS 9 platforms. I am currently trying to put together a database of Freelance Developers that is searchable/usable for both platforms. In general, all seems to be working smoothly except for one glaring hole. I want to be able to attach (either embed the doc or link to it) resumes and performance reviews (Word docs or PDFs) to the records in the database. Is there a way i can do this that works on both platforms? I'm pretty sure i've used a Container field to hold docs on the PCs but that option (as I understand it, anyway) isn't available on the Mac version.
danjacoby Posted September 4, 2002 Posted September 4, 2002 Working in FMPv6, the Help file says the following: "select Store compatible graphics in the General Document Preferences dialog box" This will allow you to view on a Mac the documents inserted via OLE on Windows. Since OLE was created by Microsoft, it isn't fully implemented on Macs -- yet another (albeit minor) reason MS needs to be severely punished for its monopolistic ways.
Anatoli Posted September 5, 2002 Posted September 5, 2002 RE: Since OLE was created by Microsoft, it isn't fully implemented on Macs -- yet another (albeit minor) reason MS needs to be severely punished for its monopolistic ways. That is -- pardon me -- ridiculous claim. To develop new technology is not monopolistic. No one ever punished Apple for developing competing technology. When Apple is not able to adapt technologies from Windows World, it is fault of Apple. If Microsoft didn't allowed the implementation of technology in Mac OS or X, then it is nasty, but probably cannot be punished for that. Apple owns FileMaker Inc. and Mac OS/X, so the ball is on Apple's yard. Apple and FM are suffering more from "self inflicted injuries" than from Microsoft. In any case, I will not call the $ 150 million gift from BG to Apple "monopolistic". And if you are not happy with Mac limitations, write to Apple. I've heard that many, many times: No, we will not do it; it is not Apple's way. So I've switched platforms for major tasks to Windows after I was using Apple since 1982.
