Filemaker Server for mac osx and OS X Server

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am in the process of converting my company over to OS X and have installed FM Server for OS X and it seems to be running great (it sure does look different - but it's the running that matters). My boss is a technology junkie and wants to jump into running FM Server on OS X Server. I have read in this forum the good, the bad and the ugly - but haven't seen any overwhelming evidence to jump or not to jump... does anyone have any suggestions.... should I jump?

Since FMI does NOT recommend using the same machine as a Filemaker Server and file server, why spend a $1000 to buy OS X Server when you don't need it? I'd save the extra labor of installation and just send Apple the grand and not install OS X Server (don't tell your boss), that way everyone will be happy! wink.gif

(Oops! Forgot the NOT in the first post. Thanks Kurt.)

I think that LiveOak means to state that FMI does NOT recommend using the same machine as FM Server and file server.

I'd like to add that the recommendation is to strip OS X Server down to the point where it is no different than OS X, so it does not make any sense the spend the extra money on it.

Whether or not to invest in OS X Server should have nothing to do with FM Server. Just decide whether you need it or not. I wanted the ease of administration of multiple users on a network that comes with OS X Server... so I bought it.

FWIW, I happily use FM Server on the same machine as OS X Server, despite the negative recommendation. I originally bought a bunch of cheap iMacs for my users and one fast dual processor machine with Gigabit Ethernet for my server. It handles both duties just fine right now. However, if I do experience any performance problems with either, the first thing I will do is get another fast machine and separate the two. But until then, I'll save my money on the hardware.
