October 26, 200223 yr Do ya'all feel it's necessary to provide an EXIT button on every layout. After all, isn't that what the windows 'X' is for? I plan on having buttons or bars to allow Users to go BACK to previous menu (or main menu) but an EXIT FM? Is it really necessary?
October 26, 200223 yr It really depends on the 'ergonomics' of the solution, and on the extent to which it is considered important to implement a 'single-click-to-anywhere' design principle. There are, however, occasions when you may wish to provide warnings and options which give the users the opportunity to 'cancl' an exit they have requested. You can't do this if their means of exiting is the windows X (or the Mac equivalent 'close' box) - so in those situations, it may be in your interests to liberally scatter your own buttons throughout layouts, in the hope that users will find them more attractive and convenient than the standard close/exit options provided by the operating systems. If you want to control these kinds of issues more tightly, then in fact there are plug-ins which will remove or disable the X buttons to create a situation where the only way out is through the doors you provide. In implementations such as these, it is probably more crucial that there be plenty of exit points (or at least signposts to them)!
October 26, 200223 yr Author Would Menu Control be one of these plug-ins which allow this type control and flexibility? I have that on my MUST HAVE list!
October 27, 200223 yr Yes MenuControl is one such. SecureFM and Display Toolbox are other options. Each works a little differently, but can be used to achieve greater control over users' ability to move in and out of files and windows.
October 30, 200223 yr I have been playing around with MenuControl and can't find a way to disable the Close box. Is this possible with MenuControl or only with SecureFM? Thomas
