Installing FM5.5 on G4 (Mirror Doors) w/2gigs

Tried installing FileMaker Pro 5.5 on my new PowerMac G4 loaded to the max with 2 gigs of RAM running Jaguar. The install stops right at the beginning with a dialog box stating that this computer doesn't have the minimum amount of RAM of 8 megs!

I haven't had enough time to try some other options, like taking out 2 memory chips to see if 1 gig of RAM qualifies as more than 8 megs. Neither did I try installing in System 9.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this situation.

I found two articles about the RAM limitation with the installation. The first one is:

-------------------------

Erroneous Install Error Indicating Not Enough RAM On Computers With Large Amounts Of RAM

ISSUE:

When installing FileMaker Pro 5.5 you get an error message that the computer does not have the required 8mb of RAM to install software. The computer has plenty of RAM for example; 2GB of RAM.

EXPLANATION:

This is a confirmed issue with the MindVision installer that FileMaker, Inc. utilizes to install our products. FileMaker, Inc. has confirmed this issue with the FileMaker products listed.

This document was published at a particular point in time. Product, services or technical information are subject to change without notice and may have changed since publication.

And that's all. No diagnosis or work-around solution!! I left a message stating their explanation still didn't help to solve the problem. Wonder if I'll receive a reply?

There was an updater file but that won't help since it updates an installed FMPro 5.5.

I'll be heading to work later today. It should be quiet enough for me to take out two or three 512meg RAM chips to see if the install can take place. I'll report back later tonight.

Success!

First I removed two DIMMs, and still received the same 8-meg memory error. That left one more chance. I removed one more DIMM leaving a total of 512megs, and the installer program went on as smooth as it should.

Now I can FMPro once again on a nice fast system.

Thanks for all your suggestions!!

That's cool. I remember reading a post that mentioned FMP is rather humble, though, and actually runs better for some reason on older/slower systems (I think it said over 40MB for FMP doesn't make much difference and that the speed of your drives is what's more significant performance-wise).

If you start experiencing problems during operation, check the posts again. I can't remember who said it, but it might have been captkurt.

Ciao for now.
