Newbies CSthreeD Posted January 16, 2003 Newbies Posted January 16, 2003 Hello, I need advice! Help! I have 1 file that must read off of 3 files. When someone checks a checkbox in the related file, and performs a find, I need it to look at one of the 3 files and give me the data that was checked off. My field names match in all 3 files(motion description)- but not the names in the value lists. Is there any way to do this? and if not, what other options do I have to get the 3 files in individually. (my reason: I have different checkbox value list names for each of the 3 files and when someone wants to see a certain group, they can select the group and then have it read from the appropriate files) Should I use a layout and relate it to the files? As you can tell I'm not that familiar with relationships- I'm trying to create this from scratch and I have no idea what I'm doing. Please help! Here is a picture of what my layout looks like- the first 3 are the master files. The last one is the related file that I want people to search from.
BobWeaver Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 This may not completely answer your question, but hopefully will get you going in the right direction. To relate one file to another, there has to be a common field in each file. They don't have to have the same name. You create the relationship from one file in the define relationships dialog by selecting the other file name, and then the field in each file that is used to relate them. Assume that in one file you have a field called "Sport" and in another file you have a field called "Game" and you create a relationship based on these two fields. If a record in each file has the data "baseball" entered in the Game and Sport fields respectively, then a link forms between those records in the two files. Once that link has been created, you can then access the values from other fields in that record from the related file. Does this help you at all?
Ugo DI LUCA Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Looking at your previous posts, you seem to be stuck with this for a while. So take some lines to exlain what kind of search you are performing, into which file, for what reason. Even give an example of the search and the result you intend to come with Searching all the males left handed that jump ? Next What are the files you have in your database ? I think you do have a Players db. If so, I still think the four files shown in your example do relate to this file.
