Reduce size of enclosing part

I'm having trouble with "reduce size of enclosing part" in the header of a receipt layout. Presently I am using only merge fields (all in one text box). Some of these merge fields are blank for some invoices, so the rest move up, but the part doesn't get any smaller, so I end up with a gap before my line items begin.

Would it help if I used a calculation field rather than a series of merged text fields?

Here is what's in my text box in case it makes a difference...

 Invoice # <<Invoices::invoiceNumber>>	<<Invoices::recordDateCreated>>

Sales Person: <<Invoices::repSales>>

<<Invoices::bCompanyName>> (#<<Invoices::accountNumber>>)

<<Invoices::bAttn>>

<<Invoices::bAddressLine1>>

<<Invoices::bAddressLine2>>

<<Invoices::bCity>>, <<Invoices::bProvince>>  <<Invoices::bPostal>>

<<Invoices::receiptCalculationPSTExempt>>

Our Contact: <<Invoices::contactFirstName>> <<Invoices::contactLastName>>

Phone: <<Invoices::contactPhoneNumber>>

geez that's a bummer...

I see how it would be odd to want to do this on a page layout, but for a receipt, where you're dealing with a roll of paper, it would be really ideal. I even tried changing the part to a "Title Header" and even a "Leading Grand Summary"... with no joy.
