Here is what you think you are doing. After doing your first find, you are doing a second find with a found set, thinking that FileMaker is going to limit the new criteria to these records.

Here is what is actually happening.

You performed a find based on some criteria.

You performed a find based on new criteria and FileMaker has discarded the criteria from you first request.

Why:

FileMaker does not do finds on a found sets. It does a complete new find every time.

Solution:

Modify your first request to include your second set of criteria.

How:

After you have performed your first find, go to the Menu under Records and select "Modify Last Find". This will put your original criteria into the Find layout and all you have to do is to add your additional criteria (i.e. your second find criteria).

Doesnt FM6.0 have this feature? I'm still on 5.0, but I thought I heard something about this being added.

But I do have a Demo, so I'll go and check that out.

It sure does, and it's called "Constrain Found Set."

Now I'll have to play with it a little and see what benefits it might provide.
