March 13, 200322 yr Greetings all, I am new to this forum, just got fm server BUT am a 15 year fm pro maniac... Am deploying FM server on a win 2002 server... I have it up and running but have some quick questions for the FMS pros... 1. Apparently you can either set your databases for 'multi-user' OR set the server to work with 'single user databases' - is the only key advantage here that YOU can better set individual prefs via the individual databases? 2. Opening the 'files' - From what I can see far... the only way to open or 'turn on' files is to do so via an admin connection (plug in) on a machine running FMP - True? Isn't there a way to launch/load files right from the server? 3. I was under the impression that TO make the file available they need to be in the Filemaker Server 5.5 directory on the win 2000 server box... and this DOES make them availble... I put a folder in this directory (called reports)... BUT WHAT isn't accessible are any SUB DIRECTORies INSIDE my 'reports' folder. - Shouldn't THEY be available as well? any help with these q's is greatly appreciated. Fritz Jung
March 13, 200322 yr Hi, 1) I found it quite better to work with single mode DBs, cause if you opened it local you didnt share it to other users. 2) 3) you can open, close, stop or run the server via a batch-file and open your DBs in several places on your server. Regards, Willi

Launch DB files in 'several places' on a win 2000 server? - perhaps I am making too big a deal out of this... Can I simply LAUNCH the files with a FM client on the server? - I can't see any place to control opening of the files ON the servers
March 13, 200322 yr Since FM Server runs as a service under Win 2000, it doesn't have a UI. You can use remote admin or write a script. This is one of the reasons I still have a fondness for FM Server under Mac OS 9, you can easily do things you can't do under NT, Win2000 and OS X. FM will only open files one directory level down (Files in a directory within the FM Server directory). You can use aliases to get around this problem. FM Client WON'T cause files to be opened in server. Don't run client concurrently with Server on your Win 2000 machine. -bd
