Rolling Up and Reporting Financial Information

Hi all-

I'm trying to write a series of reports using a multi-file FM db. The file in which I'm writing the report is a project file. This file contains specific financial information about the project, and is linked to a series of files that show the primary employee working on the project, the project funder, the proposal that initiated the project, etc. The file which holds the primary employee information also contains keys that link the employee record to a department file - this shows the department to which the employee is assigned. The department file, in turn, uses a self-join and an "owned by" key field to represent the heirarchical structure of the organization (e.g. DepartmentA and DepartmentB "belong" to DepartmentC, DepartmentC belongs to DepartmentD, and so forth) [i used the heirarchical structure technique outlined by Moyer and Bowers in Advanced FileMaker Pro 5.5!]. Using tunneling techniques I can, for each project, show the primary employee assigned to the project, the department ID of the department in which the employee works, and the departmentID of the department that "owns" the department to which the employee is assigned.

I'd like the reports to roll up financial information from discrete projects into sub-summaries for each departmental level. Going back to my example above, I would like to show a line for each employee, with the project name and financial information. I'd also like to roll up the line items by the department to which the employee is assigned, the department that owns that department, the department that owns that department, and so on. The organizational structure I'm working with has a maximum of 5 levels. I've tried using a sort order field in the department records but haven't had any luck.

I'd very much appreciate any suggestions or guidance anyone can give me.

Thanks!

Hi,

Your "Financial" may have frightened some users as I can see you didn't received any answer on this post.

May be you just found out what you were looking for but in my opinion, what you need is either a kind of Multi-key Relationship within the Line Item in order to go several levels down or up and link the projects and departments each other.

You may need however to be a little less technical for us to follow exactly your request(s).
