Dear everybody,

I am new with filemaker and I want to solve my problem. I want to make a popup list in a field in a master file. This list includes some fieldnames from another related file. I cannot make a link between its items and related fields from another file. I want to make it appear the content of the related field from another file when I click on each item of the value list. For example, my

master file is Main menu file including these fields: Activated sludge, Trickling filter, RBC ... In activated sludge field, I make a popup list (custom list) with fieldnames from another related file (Activated sludge file) such as process description, design parameters, wastewater...These fields contain text, pictures, graphic... How can I link between items in popup list in the field activated sludge in Main menu file with fieldnames in a related file? I also want to make other popup lists for trickling filter, RBC fields with the same fieldnames but they are from other related files. Each field in master files I want to link with their related files by popup lists and they will appear the content of each field in related fields like a webpage. I am confused a lot so please help me solve the problem.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Snow,

Glad you finally join the Forum.

If I understand, you want to display a value list based on records from another file.

You can either have this list with B)

- all records from the File B

- all records from the File B using relationship to the Main file.

Go to the Define Value List Menu.

Choose records from another file.

Choose only related and choose (or set) the relationship wanted.

Choose the field you want the values to be listed in your pop-up.

For what you said in your Private message, if you want to post your files via an attachment, I currently use Stuffit Expander or Zipit to send attachements in.sit or .zip.

These applications can be easily downloaded

here is a link for stuffit : http://www.aladdinsystems.com

Dear Luca,

Thanks a lot for your help. But I made 1 custom list in the field activated sludge in master file already and if I choose the field I want the values to be listed in my pop-up, it's not a list as I wish in master file, just a field link with another field in related file. Here are my zip files. I want to send them to make my question clearer.

For example:

My main menu has these fields:

popup list for this field:

Activated sludge field - Process description

- Design parameters

- Wastewater

popup list for this field:

Trickling filter field - Process description

- Design parameters

- Wastewater

....

The related files:

Activated sludge file has these fields:

- Process description (content: text)

- Design parameters (text, formula)

- Wastewater (text, pictures)

Trickling filter file has these fields:

- Process description (content: text)

- Design parameters (text, formula)

- Wastewater (text, pictures)

I want the above popup lists can link with fields in related files. When users click on process description of popup list in main menu, it will appear the content of process description field of activated sludge file. It's my wish.

Thanks.

Can you help me how to attach 2 files in forum? I don't see where it is. It doesn't ask me like the first post.

Thanks

Hello again,

I imagine these records would appear in a portal, and you want to alternate the portal content acording to the relationship chosen.

You will surely end-up with a script to go to a specific layout for each specific portal then.

If you want to have all records listed in that portals, then just use constant relationships from Main file to related files. Use a global field set to 1 at left side (in the Main file) and a auto-entered number field set to 1 in every related files (right side).

Dear Luca,

I send 2 zip files to the forum now. Could you see them and

show me how to solve my problem? I don't use portal content. I copy document from Word to field or I put pictures in the field of related file. I like to have a list like custom list but it can link with related fields from other files. It's like you click on a topic on webpage then it will appear the content of topic from another page.

Thanks

Hi Snow,

I downloaded the first attachment, but you didn't posted the second file. Try to group the 2 files in one folder and zip the folder to be posted.

I couldn't use your first file as it used some Windows data and I'm on a Mac.

I'll have a look at these files anyway.

Dear Luca,

I will post the zip file including 2 files now. Yes, I use Windows data. I don't know how to make data easy to see on Mac, too. You can see the structure of these files and you will know my problem from the lists on the right. When I click on one of them, it only appears the name, not the content of the field from related file. It's my problem. I send the file again including 2 files.

Thanks,

Snow

Here is your file back. I've just used an exitscript to trigger an external script based on the value selected from your value-list.

Note that this is a tip but you would better use a plug-in for that purpose, or a simple button next to the value list.

Dear Luca,

Thanks a lot for your help. I downloaded your files and they work with the first one (Process description). But when I clicked on schematic diagram, it said "go to Layout has been cancelled. Do you wish to continue with this script?", I don't know why. I will try to figure out and use a plug-in but I don't know about plug in much.

Thanks again and I appreciate your kind very much.
