Newbies Delio Consulting Posted April 5, 2003 Newbies Posted April 5, 2003 I have recently taken over a Mac network that I installed FM server 5.5 runing on OS 9.2. All the machines are running FM 6. The server is only running application on server but another machine is runing IP Router to give all Macs internet access over dial-up. All are connected using DHCP as the protocal for the IP Router. (should I set the server differently?)The PC is running XP and PC MacLan to give it access to the Mac printers. I can't seem to get the PC to see the host files on the Mac. What am I doing wrong?? The macs are using Appletalk to see the host files to avoid conflict with the IP Router but the server is set to accept both Appletalk and TCP/IP. Help!!!
Newbies Delio Consulting Posted April 7, 2003 Author Newbies Posted April 7, 2003 Sorry about the duplicate, the original wasn't appearing when I checked!! More craziness. If I set the server to TCP/IP, the PC shows files but half the Macs don't. All were set to TCP in preferences. If I set it to both Appletalk and TCP/IP the PC shows but all the Macs have to be on Appletalk. Now they work but the IP Router machine no longer gives anyone access to the internet!! All the macs are using the DHCP servers including thh FM PRo server. How do I solve this problem and understand what is happening??
Guest Posted April 8, 2003 Posted April 8, 2003 Everything should work over TCP/IP. No need for appletalk. The server IP address should be static and the static IP address should be in the "private" IP address pool used by the DHCP server but the specific static IP address should be excluded from the DHCP pool. You need to verify that each client is getting a valid IP address from the DHCP server in the "private" IP adress pool and then run Ping and ping the server from each client. If a client can ping the server and port 5003 is open on the server the client should be able to connect to the server.
Newbies Delio Consulting Posted April 9, 2003 Author Newbies Posted April 9, 2003 Sounds like a good solution but I need some advice on how to set a static IP address. If I set my address to 192.168.1.50 and the subnet to 255.255.255.255.0 to make sure it is in the high range of the dhcp server, do I use configure manually when I set these settings on the server and do I need to enter anything in the router address and domaine server? I have never done this before. Thanks for the advice. I'll get ti right one ov these days.

You cannot just set an address in the high range of the DHCP server, You must go to the DHCP server configuration window and restrict the address of the database server. So your private IP address range is 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 subnet 255.255.255.0. Set the server's IP address manually to 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0. Restrict this address from the DHCP address range. Thats all you should have to do.
