I am about to invest in my FM Server. This will be used in a mission critical situation if everything goes to plan. I have just been on the New Millenium site and have found that they are offering a Toshiba server using Linux, I have never used Linux but everything is all in you even buy it with user licenses, the price looks attractive.

As FmServer will be new to me as will Linux am I asking too much of myself? Has anyone any experience with this machine? I would be most curious to hear what others have to say. I do know that I will have to check up on voltages as it probably works on The US voltage which is different to what we se here on the Emerald Isle.

I would love to hear from anyone who has experience of this setup. Who has used it and what others think.

there are not too many options with fm server. Once the machine is set up and you know how to transfer your files to the linux machine, everything can be done remotely.

the voltage usually is no prob. machine should have a switch on the power supply.

Cjaeqer, How difficult is the the file transfer? We are considering using this box also. Mainly for the remote access capabiity and the fact that it secure. I'm a little concerned about linux cause I know nothing about it. Are there any other alternatives out there?

Mark -

Yes, you may be able to get a Linux server cheaper but you say you know little about Linux - what is your already acquired Mac or Windows experience worth to your organization? What will be your support/training costs be if you move to Linux?

Audiofreak - Any server operating system that you know nothing about will not be secure, period - your existing OS knowlege/experience is your most valuable tool in running a secure system. There are good remote access solutions for Windows and Mac servers in addition to Linux.
