We are a small K-8 school (300 students) using a FM Server 5.0.2 for our school database on a Mac network (9.2) If we were to get another server, could we easily run two servers, one for the main school database, and a second as a student server for their projects, to learn about databses, etc.

But we would not want the students to even see the main database. Would like this to happen without jumping through too many hoops. Any thoughts?

Cheers

You probably don't need 2 servers, but better design. Hide all files and do some kind of Menu system with good login.

Just to answer the technical question: FM files, even those that are part of the same system can spread across multiple servers. But, as Anatoli said, you really don't need multiple servers unless you intend to give the students direct physical access to one of them.

if it would all be on the same network the files are always accesable trought filemaker.

with or without 2 servers.

That means, even if the files arent "visable" the studends can still see them if they would choose import -> host

or trough opening files in a script.

might be a good idea to put the students on another subnet that way they wont have access to the server.

Only very brave programmer will leave the Import/Export available to users.

Only complete naive person will leave such script in system smile.gif
