If you drive this via script, you can have any control you desire.

don't do it that way. build a relation and put the default record id in there. (either using global field or a corrresponding field in your main/user pref database for networked solutions).

I assume the user is taken to this record when he reopens the database, so why not use the ID of the current record automatically?
