Online User Registration System

Hi,

I would like to create a simple online Web user registration system much like any forum registration system where users can manage their own usernames and passwords. Once a legit username and pw gets entered, user only sees his/her own account (record) and can update address, tel number etc.

Is this difficult to do? Pointers to templates or commercial products that do this or a short explanation on how this can be done would be appreciated.
