tc2468 Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 hello all, I am new to this forum and have a question i currently have FMpro server running on a 604e 200mhz mac os 8.6 i have no intentions of upgrading to a newer server because this would mean updating all the ver. 4 clients as well. my question is what would be the highest os i should run with server 3, i have a B/W G3 available
cjaeger Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 dedicated machine --> MacOS 8.6 on b/w G3 is leanest thus fastest. If you have to use MacOS 9, use latest 9.2.x. But why not leave the db on the 604e (provided you have a fast hard disk on that machine and FM Server is the only app running, no [AppleShare-] filesharing, no nothing, unecessary extensions off).
tc2468 Posted June 17, 2003 Author Posted June 17, 2003 I figure running server3 on the b/w G3 300 would be faster maybe i wouldnt notice that much of an increase
LiveOak Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 In a FM system it is more important to have fast clients than a fast server (assuming you don't have 250 clients!). I would definitely stay with OS 8.6 for the server on a 604e or G3 machine. -bd
cjaeger Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 but it's equally important to have a FAST hard disk on the server (or a big disk cache/ram disk). Depends on the size and number of your files. Also, a fast network connection would be desirable. Apart from that, performance on the two machines should be almost equal.
tc2468 Posted June 17, 2003 Author Posted June 17, 2003 are there any issues with the mac os 9.2.2 or should i just stay with 8.6 8.6 has been solid for the most part and will i find any improvements by installing 9.2.2 on either machine thanks for the replies
Kurt Knippel Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 Stay with 8.6, unless upgrading to Filemaker Server 6.
