Newbies Armitage Posted August 11, 2003 Newbies Posted August 11, 2003 Hi All, I am fairly new to Filemaker - but not totally ignorant of database theory (though I feel pretty stupid at the moment) What I am trying to do is expand an exsisting relational filemaker database to include some new tables, namely I have a bunch of staff details, with their work details in another table. What I am trying to do is build an 'availability' table so a member of staff can phone up and say they can work on such and such a date and at such and such a time. So what I want to be able to do is add many records to my new availability table all based on one id_number field- which is obviously the same in both tables. When I try and insert the id_number into my new table (either as a calculated result or as a straight relation) I just get errors any help at all is hugely appreciated (Filemaker 6 by the way)
Razumovsky Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Hi- You probably mean an "File" instead of "Table" for FM. So you have an Staff File and an Availabilty File related id_Number::id_number. in relationship dialog box, allow creation of related records. Put a portal to Availability on a layout in your Staff file, with related fields (available date, available start time, etc...). Now, as soon as you type in new data in the portal, a new record will be created in Availability file with the id_number automatically filled in with the id_number of the Staff record you were on. Make sense? -Raz
