Newbies Firebrand_NI Posted August 26, 2003 Newbies Posted August 26, 2003 Hi there Guys, Is there anyway to create a popup category list field which is will not be repeated to all other records in the database? Help much appreciated!! Cheerz
Lee Smith Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 H Firebrand, I'm not sure I'm understanding your question correctly, but a value list can be attahced to one or more fields, using a Popup Menu, Check Box, Popup List, or Radio Buttons. HTH Lee
-Queue- Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 Can you elaborate on 'will not be repeated'? Do you mean once an entry is selected from the list, it is not available to other records? Or do you mean there is only one of each entry in the list, regardless of how many records contain the data?
Newbies Firebrand_NI Posted August 26, 2003 Author Newbies Posted August 26, 2003 sorry guys I mean that when I create a blank field or in this case a pop-up menu which I quess by default appears throughout the entire database of records I have made. But is there a way to confine this pop-up menu to only one record in the database without repeating or displaying or appearing in all records in the database? Cheers again!!
-Queue- Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 I'm missing the point of why you'd want a pop-up if it's only applicable to one record. Why not just format it as a regular field? And to answer your question (I think), no, anything you design in layout mode applies to all records.
Newbies Firebrand_NI Posted August 26, 2003 Author Newbies Posted August 26, 2003 ok I have on each record within the DB server details pertaining to a web site But what i'm trying to achieve is to create a different pop-up menu for each record containing the emails relating to that particular website. some of the web sites have one email account some have many email accounts. I'm using the pop-up menu to try save space as as said above some records have many email accounts. Many thanks!!
-Queue- Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 So, if you have your email data entered for each record and separated by carriage returns, then the information is already different for each record. I think a relational db to the email info might be more efficient and you could use a portal instead of a menu. But I don't see where your problem is.
Newbies Firebrand_NI Posted August 27, 2003 Author Newbies Posted August 27, 2003 Ah thanks for the advice But because I'm a complete novice I'd have to be so bold as to ask what a relational DB is and what portals are and how would I implement these? Many thanks!!
Logixx Posted August 28, 2003 Posted August 28, 2003 Hi Firebrand! If I understand your point, your problem is only to have a field look like a reg one in some records (0 or 1 values) and like popups in other ones (2 or more values)? This is not possible, as a field will always have the same format throughout a database on the same layout. The solution is thus to create 2 layouts and entirely control the navigation by scripts testing the contents of that field. I honestly don't see any benefit out of this: what's the point if a field looks like a menu and actually does not pop up as it lacks the second (or even first) value? Concerning the relationships and all that theoretical stuff, it's quite impossible to elaborate on it in a forum. I suggest you first learn the concepts in a book and then come back for further accurate details (if any).
