August 28, 200322 yr Hi a newbie post here! Ok, so i've figured out how to host a db locally and display it on the intranet. But how do i do it via the server? I am running Filemaker Pro 6 Unlimited, and Filemaker Server 5.5. I have turned on the web companion component on the db itself and hosted it on the server. I THOUGHT i'd found the ip address but nothing happened... but then I've probably just stuffed up the whole process because i am a newbie..
August 28, 200322 yr You will open the FMS hosted databases in Unlimited via the HOST button and then check the WebCompanion for Instant Web Publishing. Then look into FM databases with MS IE browser pointing to the IP of Unlimited.
September 11, 200322 yr It depends on how you are wanting to distribute your database. If you are wanting to publish the data to clients via a web browser, the previous response is correct, just enable the web companion, create your web pages to interact with the database and connect to it via a browser (be sure to check the port you are publishing to in the web companion configuration). If you are wanting users to connect to your database through the FileMaker Pro client, turn on file sharing on the database(s) on your server, then choose open remote from the file menu on the FMP clients.
September 11, 200322 yr Good point. I was just following the "web companion component" and Unlimited bit.
January 6, 200422 yr Is there any drawback to having Filemaker Server and Filemaker Unlimited running on the same machine? We have been sharing dbs via the CDML/Web Companion features in FM Unlimited for almost a year with no speed issues. Today we installed Filemaker Server -- on the same machine as FM Unlimited -- and we seem to be slowly drawing to a halt. What would be the reason for this? I would think that having FM Unlimited open files from a local FM Server would not be noticeably slower than opening the files directly. In fact, I tried opening some of the files in FM Server and some directly in FM Unlimited and it's still slow... it's like the whole machine is bogging down. I'm using Windows 2000 Pro (NOT Server) and have also tried this under Windows XP Home (NOT Pro) and it seems to work OK under WinXP. Any ideas?
