Help with Pop-Up lists to modify selection

Featured Replies

I have two Pop-Up lists in my Contact file. The first one is Manufacturer and the other is Model. What I want to have happen is this. Once a "Manufacturer" is selected from the manufacturer filed, when you click on the "Model" field, only models related to that specific manufacturer are shown as possible choices. Makes and models are located in the Manufacturer file. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

"when you click on the "Model" field, only models related to that specific manufacturer are shown as possible choices."

Related is the key word.

Create a relationship from your 'Manufacturer' field in the Contact File to the 'Manufacturer' field in the Manufacturer File.

-----> ManufacturerRel

Then, create a Value List of Models in the Contact File (ModelsVL) using the option "related" , picking ManufacturerRel and choosing the Model Field in the Manufacturer File.

Now, as soon as the Manufacturer Field will be populated, you'd be given the related Models of this Manufacturer.

Ugo it works great and I hope I can ask one other question.

I have a "General Data" file where data entry actually takes place. It does not have the Manufacturer or Model fields. These fields are in the Contacts file and Manufacturer file only. The General Data and Contacts files are related by a unique ID number.

My problem is that the "Model" field works great in the Contacts file (showing Makes for specific manufacturer only) but I can't get it to work that way in the General Data file. I still get all of the models from all of the manufacturers. Of course the "Model" field actually resides in the :: Contacts file.

I thought once it worked correctly in the Contacts file it work in the General Data file as well. But no such luck. Is there a way to make it work?

Thanks Ugo,

Bill

Bill,

You said :

"It does not have the Manufacturer or Model fields. " (the General Data File)

and then :

"the "Model" field works great in the Contacts file (showing Makes for specific manufacturer only) but I can't get it to work that way in the General Data file"

:?

I was saying that it works as you posted in the [Contacts] file and it is related to the [Manufacturer] file by "Manufacturer" field and "Make" field.

All I was saying is that the [General Data] file does not have these defined fields;

::Manufacturer

::Make

these fields are from the [Contacts] file as stated in my original post.

I just need to be able to do in the [General Data] file (Makes that pertain to a specific manufacturer) the same as I do in the Contacts file. With the actual data to reside in the [Contacts] file, I just want it enter it through the [General Data] file.

Thanks Ugo,

Bill

If I understand correctly :

Manutacturer and Models are inputed in the Contact File, using values from the Manufacturer File.

While in the General Info File, these fields are already related fields.

Is this correct ? If so, WHY would you like to use a value list here, as these fields are already "defined" by their relationship ?

Unless the data in the contact file is inputed from the General Info with a relationship set to allow creation of related records. Check this attachment that had been posted here some time ago. I can't remember who posted it (DJ ?), but it surely would help if this latest assumption is correct.

Thanks again,

Bill
