October 3, 200322 yr When you insert a file like a Quicktime Movie or jpeg into a container field, where does it store the data? Does the file size of the file.fp5 increase as you add quicktime movies to the database? Or does it store info about the file somewhere else and accesses it? If so where does it store that file? Thanks, Paul
October 3, 200322 yr http://www.filemaker.com/ti/107292.html "If you select Store only a reference to the file, FileMaker Pro doesn't import the graphic file, it only keeps track of where it is on your hard disk. " I.e., storing the reference keeps your db size smaller, but you need to give some thought to your folder structure on your disk so that the db doesn't lose track of the files. FileMaker expects to find it in the same place as when you inserted it.
October 3, 200322 yr Hi Paul, QuickTime Movies are not stored in the database, the database only refers to the movie file. With Pictures you can choose if Filemaker should only store a reference to the file, or store the complete picture. Regards, Ernst
October 3, 200322 yr Author So could the files be stored on the same server as a server that has Filemaker Server on it?
October 4, 200322 yr Yes, but the volume that the files are on should be visible for all clients, i.e. mounted. The volume that the Filemaker Databases are on should NOT be accessible by the clients, to prevent them from opening them directly in stead of via the host button. Ernst
