Yeti Posted January 17, 2001 Posted January 17, 2001 I'm tempted to order the Famous Book Scriptology. I browsed on the web somewhat to find out what the comments of the users are (there is no way for me to see the book before ordering) I found different comments, ranging from Hallelujah-statements to overrated ****-book. But I can't tell the worth of these statements. Has any of you any experience with this book? Please tell me about it. I trust members of this BB more than any Nono from Neverland... ------------------ Yeti
yafreax Posted January 17, 2001 Posted January 17, 2001 i've read most of the book. It's a pretty darn good little thing to have. is it the best out there? Well, of it's kind, possibly. It really reveals a lot of tricks that can really help you to understand the functions more. I've only been using FM (or any DB/ scripting program for that matter) since July of 2000, so maybe that is why it has helped me so much. Those that have been with filemaker or a similar scripting type program for a while are probably the ones that find it over rated. It does save me asking questions on here when i have time to look into it for the answers. Sometimes i won't have to ask b/c i can figure it out using Scriptology or the FM 5 Bible. the chapter layout is basically as follows: 1 chapter on Intro to book. 2 chapts on Basics and methods of scriptmaking. 3 chapts on Scriptmaker in depth, (debugging, exact definitions, tricks, etc. 2 chapts on calculations. 1 chapt each on Validation, Data operations, and a semi-outdated (if you use FM5) Value List chapter, Cross - Platform issues and tips, and interface design issues and tips. 3 chapts on Relationships and Portals (pretty helpful stuff here.) and the final "Advice" chapter. Pretty good stuff in the appendices and a total of 500 pages. I think its a good deal. it was worth it for me. my 2
LiveOak Posted January 17, 2001 Posted January 17, 2001 If you are relatively new to FM, Scriptology is definitely a good source of techniques. It would take you a lot of time and effort to find all of the information in the book elsewhere. Even for the experienced user, I consider it a good reference and wouldn't call it overrated (I've been a user since 1989 and a FM consultant since 1993). -bd
garhop Posted January 19, 2001 Posted January 19, 2001 If I'm not mistaken, you can DL three chapters from the Scriptology book from the Scriptology website. I have both the FMP Bible and Scriptology. Each seems to provide excellent information. The Bible seems to be more straight forward and does a much better job of explaining the program than the FMP Manuals. Scriptology provides a collection of little known tips, tricks and ways of doing things that are not likely to be found in any other single location. HTH Gary
Yeti Posted January 19, 2001 Author Posted January 19, 2001 Okay,Okay, you've convinced me!!! I've been using FMpro for almost half a year now and consider myself a novice-off, but not yet an experienced developer. Oooh, I can't wait till the book gets here. I'd love my learning curve to go up and up and up and...... ------------------ Yeti
