Is there a way to have a dialog box, where a user can input in to the box itself?

This feature is available in FMP 6 - the "Show Custom Dialog" script step. There are 3 input fields that you can use.

I'm not sure if it is available in 5 or 5.5 - I know it's relatively recent.

That feature was new in FM 6.0. In the earlier versions, you have to create a layout that simulates a dialog box.
