Hi all

I have create a type ahead portal, but i have one question.

How do you keep the curor form leaving the field you are typeing in and going into one of the fields in the portal after you type the first letter and press the tab button on the key broad. I have reviewed Russ namefinder and he has formatted the fields for "do not allow enrty" and have also reviewed Ugo type ahead sample and he has a Go button but you have to click in the type field everything time to push the button. If you press the tab button in Ugo example, you goto a field inside the portal. We have a contact db that has about two hundred names in it. Our sales people would like to search the db for the last time these people have been contacted and update the db when they have.

The portal has only three fields:

First name

Last name

Last time contacted.

I can make the first two no entry allowed, but i need to be able to modified the last time contacted field.

The type ahead is done on the last name

Thanks

Lionel

so in oder words you are trying to insert into one filed:

Name: [Jean <tab> Mc. <tabb> JR.]

and you would like to "stay in the same field" while being able to tab through it?

"Our sales people would like to search the db for the last time these people have been contacted and update the db when they have"

find all records WHERE Contact_date >"flag"..

flag being a date of your choise..."last contacted since 1/1/2003 ..."

but, of course, you would have to decide how to record the Date of Contact.

each time they call or just one date that will be auto-updated Current Date.

Anyhow...just some of my initial thoughts...

All the best!

The way I do it is to have a "dummy" field (I use a global container field, enterable, but with nothing in it, 1 x 1 pixel). I put it just below and to the right of the entry field, on its border. This makes it the next field in the Tab Order. With only those 2 fields on the layout, when you Tab or hit Enter the portal below refreshes, but nothing else appears to happen. The cursor goes into the 1 pixel field, which is too small to really show. If you hit Tab again, you're back in the entry field. It ain't perfect but it works pretty well.

I meant "with only those 2 fields 'enterable' on the layout." Obviously you'd have other fields visible in the portal, just not enterable. It's a "Choice" layout, no data entry done here.

hi fenton and Leb i sol

I need to be able to enter data in the field "last_time_contact. I have a text field that i type in that is not in the portal.

I understand what you are telling me because i have a type ahead portal already for our natinal board number but the only field that allows entry is the field that we type in.

I really don't follow here....is it in the portal or NOT?

If u have a field that is NOT in the portal and most likely NOT in the related file, OK, so type in it?! It will become a part of a single records that IS related to those records displayed in portal-from other file.

If it IS in the portal and IS in the "other" related file then make sure your relationship has "Allow creation of related records" and also allow entry in teh field in the portal itself.....and your should be able to edit/change add record...

All the best!

Hi Leb

The field that i type in is not in the portal itself but on the same layout as the portal and is related to the calculated field that stimulate the type ahead.

Thanks

Lionel
