February 14, 200421 yr Hi I want to show 5 related fields from a related file in a portal. When I create a portal, it appears with only one column. How do I configure the portal columns (related fields) I want to display? Thanks Alain
February 14, 200421 yr Hi: Do you mean one column, or one row? To make more fields in the portal (columns), stretch the portal with the handles and add fields to the first row in layout mode. If you want to add more rows, do this: Right click on the portal and select Portal format. There is a box where you can specify how many rows you want. Ken
February 14, 200421 yr Author I mean columns. But I still don't get how to do it: - I defined my relationship to be used - I created my portal in the master file in order the display and I see several empty rows in one column, instead of several columns of related fields... Thanks for helping me Alain
February 14, 200421 yr Did you make sure you have matching data in your key fields? This is how relationships become functional. To do this, put the same data that is in your key field of your main file, and enter the same data in the key field of your child file.
February 14, 200421 yr Hi Alain, when you said you did it - do you mean you figured out your problem? Or that you've created your relationship as Kenneth suggested? FM doesn't automatically insert the related fields for you. Which is silly in my opinion. FM should offer you a Specify Field insertion box to be polite, but it doesn't. After you place your portal, you must select Insert > Field and (at the top) select your relationship name, then (one at a time) select your related fields to place within the portal. If you've done that and no records are showing when you switch back to Browse (and there should be) then you have something wrong in your relationship. LaRetta
February 14, 200421 yr Author Hi Laretta Now I figured it out... tx to you and Kenneth for saving me time. Brazil is burning, Carnival is coming and I am still working!
February 14, 200421 yr Well, it sounds like it's time to stop working and go and party your brains out!
February 14, 200421 yr Hmmm, well I think FileMaker is the best party-animal around!! It's better at relationships than anyone I know! Yikes! That sounded a bit sad seeing it's a Friday night and I'm still working also. LaRetta
