Slow Drop down Value list?

Featured Replies

I have a drop down that list options from a value list of 4 different items and when i click on it, it takes about 1 sec for the list to appear. In previous versions it was almost instant. Why is that?

I've not experienced that problem in FM 7 Dev. Could you have some memory problems with your system?

I have exactly this problem (Win XP Dev 7) and have posted two topics relating to it. The more you use list boxdses on a particular layout the longer the delay upto about 1 sec I have found.

Either way I have taken to using pull down menus now as thay are immediate. I have to live with the appearance problems - drop shadow etc.

I am relatively new to FileMaker Pro and have encountered the same problem. It takes about one second for the list to appear. One second may not be a long time, but if I am accessing several value lists for each record, data entry can feel slow and cumbersome. I have one gig of memory and doubt if the problem lies there. I wonder if it is an operating system issue.

What do you think?

Have not experienced this myself.

Are you talking about Pop-up Lists or Pop-up menus? Are these dynamic value lists or just a simple list of items? Is this over a network or on a local drive or both?

in layout mode if you choose the "Field Format" and choose Format Field as "Pop-up List" it is really slow. But if you change it to "pop-up Mune" like johnrh said it is instant. THanks johnrh!

Maybe it's a platform specific problem. Any OS X users have this problem?

Well,

This is not very new. It happened with 6 too, and even worse when in List Mode.

Editing should be restricted to Form Mode, as Lists are made for reporting.

True though that drop-down menus lessen this behaviour, but they often cause a lot of screen redraw

I have no noticeable problem on Mac OS 10.3.3, Dev7 or FMP7, using Values from a field. But I don't have a lot of values in these fields. I wouldn't use a value list if I did.

Hi Fenton,

My post wasn't clear enough.

Editing in Form Mode

Reports in List Mode

Therefore no Value List in List Mode is a logical structure

+ 100% agreed Value Lists should be limited to a few number of items.

Hi,

I'm using OS X 10.3.3. and FMP Dev 7 with very large value lists (list from a field) and haven't seen any hesitation in the drop down value list. This on a solution I use every day.

I attended the Magnificent Seven tour on Portland Oregon and asked a programmer about this issue. I was told it is a bug, she was not sure if it would be fixed by v2. No word in when v2 is comming

I'm having the same problem. I'm on a Windows 2000 laptop. But my value lists are sometimes taking 3-5 seconds whereas in v6 they were pretty much instantaneous. I reported the issue to my Filemaker rep who passed it on.

I`m having same trouble with Filemaker Pro7 in Japanese. I`m on a laptop pc with Windows 2000. (Also, XP too.) In the first time, I thought the trouble was only on the Japanede version, or something in my PC`s trouble.

If anybody had an idea, please write on here.
