May 11, 200421 yr Hello, I am wondering if I need to get the developer version to develope a database for FM7 Advanced? I know it is not necessary, but would it help? Thanks Jason
May 12, 200421 yr If it is your own money: No. Unless you need to rename files regularly. if it's somebody else's money: Yes. You'll need to rename files regularly.
May 12, 200421 yr Developer 7 is worth it for the Custom Functions alone. And the ability to rename Script Maker is a kick in the pants!
May 13, 200421 yr I don't believe that Developer provides event triggers, but I could be mistaken - I have 7.0v1. Developer does ship with 24U, New Milennium and Troi plugin templates but it still requires third-party plugin to execute script upon field exit. I have not even played with my new Server preview yet. Debugger is also a very handy feature in Developer and I use it quite often. I always 'walk' through my more complex scripts and I've found things that would have been missed otherwise. And if you need to rename a multi-file solution just once, it pays for itself. Uh, about executing a script upon field exit? I would love to be wrong in this case.
May 13, 200421 yr Newbies I don't see any evidence of an event-based model in FileMaker7 at all, so I would be surprised to see something like a script fired on field exit.
May 13, 200421 yr Go to the Database Pros site, resources page: http://www.databasepros.com/resources.html Click on the "new" graphic. At the bottom of the page is: Hidden Plug-ins
May 14, 200421 yr I attended a road show in Detroit last week and they had a demonstration that showed how to fire a script when exiting a field. It is only available in Developer edition. You set it under the options of the field. You use the auto enter calculated value. Select the external script: xmpl_startscript and enter in the name of the script you want it to fire. It worked really nice in the demo. John
May 14, 200421 yr The curious thing is that is does not require Developer. I have both Dev 7 and FileMaker 7 (on a different machine). It worked in plain FileMaker 7, and could be created and modified. Whether or not they have FileMaker's blessing to post on a public web site is another question. But this is Database Pros, John Mark Osbourne, one of the most respected FileMaker trainers since forever. It's his file. So I'm assuming it's OK.
May 14, 200421 yr Fenton: You have the xmpl_startscript available in FMP 7 pro edition? I just looked and I don't have it. Did I not install something? John
May 14, 200421 yr Read my earlier post. I pointed the way to a file on the web which includes the plug-in. I don't know the why and wherefore, but there it is.
