simple Q: centering a single field on a line

Featured Replies

This should be simple, but can't seem to find the way to do it.

In the header of the layout I have 3 label fields, each occupying its own line. I want the label field to be centered for each line. For example, like a letterhead-Name top line; Address next line and date 3rd line.If this were a word processor I would select the text and simply center the 3 lines on the page. I can't seem to do this with FMP. The only way to get this to work is to expand the label field the complete width of the page, and then go to -->format-->align text -->center. I would like to be able to just center the label field, not the text inside the label field.

Please advise.

Thanks

"expand the label field the complete width of the page, and then go to -->format-->align text -->center"

Yep, that's how it's done. All decent page layout programs are the same... it's Word that is broken.

Altewrnativley use the Graphic Rulers to measure the page width, the ude the T-squares to center the text block on the T-square.

Be aware that font rendering is slightly different between Mac and Windows, bets practice is to make the text box wider than the text width (allowing a bit of rooom each side) then center the text within the block.

If there is an existing item that is centered on the page you can use that. If not, draw a line object from left to right side(border to border). Lock this centered object (or the line) using Arrange > Lock.

Grab your label and this locked object (hold down shift while selecting each one) and Alignment > Top To Bottom (none) and Left To Right (center). The unlocked object will move to center around the locked one but the locked one won't move at all. I use it to center several objects at a time.

Vaughan's advice about increasing the text box size is correct, however. When you do, you will still want to center the text within also. But having small text fields (properly centered) is better than constantly running into text boxes all through your layout that expand the width of pages.
