nerdgirl Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Hi All, This is my first post here. I do know FileMaker pretty well, but I am in uncharted waters now. Here's the scoop: I am attempting to move our server from Mac to PC. I have figured out how to move the databases. I need some help though configuring the server now. I have virtually no documentation and my wizards do not function. I am using FileMaker Pro Server 5. So, my question is...where do I begin? On the Mac, as the host, we made aliases of the databases and there is a complicated script (I think) that opens them for use across the internal network. I'm not sure where to begin to host the databases on the PC server. Please HELP. I hope that I am making sense. Thanks in advance for ANY help. -nerdgirl
Kurt Knippel Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 First off, why the move from Mac to Windows? I ask because there is often no reason to do so.
nerdgirl Posted July 15, 2004 Author Posted July 15, 2004 We need to move it because our LAN guys will not support a Mac. We used to use Macs in our department, but not anymore. So, we need to get it on the PC. I wasn't the one who set up the server on the Mac, so I am not sure how to go about doing it on the PC.
Will Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 Here's the basic idea - there should be documentation on the FM Server CD you can refer to for specifics - Install FM server Copy your databases to c:program filesfilemakerfilemaker server 5 Go to a PC with FileMaker Pro and use the FileMaker server CD to install the server administration tool - use the tool to open and server the databases on the server. From the server you can configure automatic backups, etc. I'm not sure about your scripts - in the interim user can access the databases fro the client side using the "hosts" button - if the databases don't automatically appear then the IP of the server will need to be specified. nerdgirl Posted July 17, 2004 Author Posted July 17, 2004 I have copied my databases to the filemaker server 5 folder. Nothing happens when I try to open them from another computer. Do they need to go somewhere specifically? From the guest computer, I click on "Hosts" and specify the server machine IP, but I do not see any databases to open. A problem with configuring my server from the server console is that none of my wizards work. The FM help desk people said that is a common problem with Windows 2000. Anyway, I don't know what to do to get my databases hosted in the server. I can't find any documentation that says how to do this at a basic level other than "go to the console and use the wizards". Any help? -nerdgirl Any suggestions?
laker_42 Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 After copying the databases to the FM Server 5 folder, restart the FM Server. FM Server should automatically start hosting the databases. You should be able to access the databases via FM Server after that. HTH, John
nerdgirl Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 I got it working. Thanks so much for all the help. I think that I was making it harder than it was. Thanks again, ng
