Newbie Question- Field without Label-

Featured Replies

Hello!

I saw a movie file on filemaker from filemakerforums.com.

In the movie, he has a field which shows 'Enter your name'

And when he starts to enter his name into the field, the sentence disappears

and field gets ready to receive input.

I want the same thing, but there isn't any information about this simple thing in the movie. He was trying to teach a more difficult one without explaining how to make easy one, but I don't know how to make the simple one either.

How can I make this?

My field is a text field.

Should I make the field a calculation field?

I'm a very newbie and get no idea of making this.

plz help me . Thanks~ wink.gif

Hi ZamZame,

I'm unsure what movie you're talking about. I'd like to get my hands (errr, eyes) on it. Can you remember where you saw it so I can compare processes?

You are in luck that you have 7. Attached is a demo of a way I came up with a week or so ago. See if this is what you are thinking of. It includes a word.doc which explains it in detail. It's simple to set up.

Auto Enter Text is an Option to the Text Fields, and some of the other type of fields too. Go into Define Fields, select your text field and click on the Option button.

Keep in mind, this is for newly records created after the change, it will not go back and fill those blank fields for existing records. There are ways to do that too, but this isn't it.

oh, oh - I didn't notice you are using 7, maybe this has changed. I see LaRetta has responded, so follow her advice if my suggestions doesn't work.

Hi Lee,

The Auto-Enter (Replace) is one of my favorites. But I decided it wasn't good to put 'label' text within regular data. If you wanted to find blank Categories, it wouldn't find it because it would contain the text 'Category' -- problems like that. Or to have the label text start appearing in Value List popups - yuk. smile.gif

Hi LaRetta,

Very Good! Good-Post.gifBirthdayPartyGuy.gif

You make some excellent points, I knew there were reasons I didn't use this option very much, The Blank field would or could be a real nightmare to the developer in the future.

Thanks for the tip.

Wow Thank you very much!

LaRetta and Lee

The tip LaRetta gave me was what I was looking for.

Actually I wanted most but gave up this because it looked difficult to make.

But with your help,I've made this.

Also Lee, thank you for your tip. I didn't know there is an auto-enter text option.

Thank you~

Have a nice day both of you. laugh.gif
