You could use one of the scheduling plug-ins to run the script on a predetermined schedule.

You can do small script, which will evaluate your need and call that script from some major scripts which are always in use.

Just create a script that runs at startup to perform the check, and give th users a big button that lets them perform the check again whenever they want to.
