Using WinXP and FMP 6.0v4, a learning novice:

I will explain the best I can. I have 200 people in my FMP. I created a field called "placed finished in race". Data entered is: 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, 4th place, 5th place, 6th place, 7th place, 8th place, 9th place, 10th place, 11 place, 12th place, "Not Finish" and " " are all entered into this field.

I think what I am asking help for is to count how mant times 1st place thorugh 12th place have been entered. This will give me a count of how many kids finished a race when it is run... FYI: I do not want to count the "Not Finished" or " "-blank fields..

any help in creating a cal field for this..

Thanks

Are you asking for the count of those you completed the race? Or are you asking how many finsihed 1st, how many finished 2nd, etc.?

Is this a one time operation?

Thanks... I gave this a try but was not able to find Filter part of the Cal. I am using FMP 6.0v4 Is this the reason?

I think finding out how many Place fields had a number of some kind, is what I am looking for. This will be information that I hope to keep adding to. Does this mean I need a golbal field for "Places finished in race"?

Thanks again...

Create a new calc field called "Placed", patterncount(placed finished in race,"place")

Create a Summary Field "SummPlaced" which is the total of Placed.

This should give the number of placed runners in your current found set.

I followed these suggestions and was not able to get the newly created field to work. Created a new calc field called "Placed", patterncount(placed finished in race,"place") --FYI shows the number 0,even when information entered into "placed finished in the race"

Then created Sum(placed) --FYI also only shows 0 when information is entered. Both are cal fields. MIght have missed something, any feedback will be welcomed.

Thanks

Did you create a calculation field or a number field with an auto-enter calculation? The latter won't update after the record is created.
