How can I use scripting to get a value from the list? say 1, 2, 3, 4

Use the Substitute Function in a Calculation, a script step or Replace in the Main menu Go to Menu > Records > Replace

If by "Paragraph separated" you mean that the list is delimited by the ASCII character whose value is decimal 13, you can use the function MiddleValues(text, valueNumber, numberOfValues).

The example in the "Help" for the function is reasonably clear.
