I'm not sure what you mean by "is in paper table". but there are a number of formats that FileMaker can exchange with Excel, including Excel's own format.

Start by RTFM about the different File Formats that can be imported and exported, or you can access the Online Help in FileMaker and type or paste this in the Index Window:

file formats, About file formats

There you will find a description about each of the formats and what they do. The best way to deal with this is, to test some of them that sound right, experiment with them, and see what works best for your situation.

Thanks Lee.

The precise situation is as follows. I have imported a number of fields from another table(file) to the current paper table. I have changed a number of informations in that new table. Unfortunatelly i 've realised later that i've forget to import one of the fields which was needed. Now i want to import that in to my table. I've tought that would be easier if i first export that to Excel and then from Excel to my table!!!!

Can anybody helps me?

Thanks,

What format did you export your data in. I.e., did you use the Merge or one of the others that also export the Field names?

Not to hijack a thread, but this is a problem I need to solve also.

I have a csv file with data that I need to import/update to my FM database. The data in the csv file is in no particular order. Each line (record) contains 5 different pieces of data. The first item in each line tells me which record the other items in that line need to be imported into.

I want this automated, so I would some help with a script that can do this.

Thanks!

Hi Phil,

You aren't really hijacking it, you may be just moving this post along for Sima2004.

The key to importing a file into an existing database (text, or otherwise), lies in the Import dialog box.

You must be able to identify what is an existing record to be update and which are new records to be created. The key needs to be unique to each record (Client ID), Name and Company, etc., and exist in both files. I usually use as many fields as I can (two or three fields for sure). Once these key fields are selected, you need to make sure that the boxes having to do with replace existing date (update), and create new records are checked.

Thanks for a quick reply.

Ahhh, I got it. Indeed, the key is the 'Update matching records...' button down in the left hand corner (FileMaker v6). Voila!

Now I need a script. smile.gif

Thanks a ton!

Run the import, then create a script with the Import Records [No dialog, Restore] step. The import is static from then on. If you find you need to change the order, run another import, then open and close the script and select 'Replace' for import order.

Note that your script may require a Show All Records step, if you want the 'Update matching records' to occur, since it only applies to the current found set.

Your File is Merge in Excel?

Then you should be able to access your data in at least two ways.

1). Open the File in FileMaker (Menu >> File >> Open) and FileMaker will
