I have an enduser *deep sigh*...who has apparently built a database in FileMaker 5. She is now trying to share this database, and the network users have no problems. However, any time she tries to open it locally on her machine, it gives her an error 10048, saying that it cannot host a file... I understand this is normally a problem with FileMaker server, but she's not running it on there. Any ideas, anyone? I appreciate any response.

Hi Ken,

How is the file being shared?

Is she using Windows or Mac? Does she have the file sharing on or off?

The file is set up in a folder on her desktop. I've shared the folder just using Windows XP sharing. She's using windows XP.

Hi Ken,

Bingo, Do not use the system's File sharing, use FileMaker's built in File Sharing instead.

Actually, there in lies the problem. Tried that before they were using the Windows file sharing, and were only trying to use the FileMaker's sharing. Either way, it's not working.

Actually the error code says this:

10048 Windows Error Codes. Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted.

Most likly the problem is Firewall related. Turning on Windows file sharing opens the appropriate port in the XP firewall. Turning on Filemaker's file sharing does not.

So disable Windows file sharing...then enable Filemaker's file sharing and host the database that way. Finally open any necessary ports on the XP machines to allow sharing via port 5003 (Filemaker's default Network sharing port).

I am having the same problem using Filemaker 5 with Win XP. After you open the program - it gives the error 10048 - FileMaker cannot host a file because of a network error. Files marked as Multi-user will not be available over the network (10048).

Users who have windows 2000 and being hosted on the same server are not getting this error. what's the problem? i tried turning windows file sharing off. and the database is set on multi-user sharing. can anyone give me a clue? thanks.

I'm experiencing the same problem with both FM Dev 6, and FM Dev 7 on my machine. I've also tried a co-workers XP machine and FM 6. Neither laptops can host multi-user FM files.

I receive the following error below with FM 6 products.

"FileMaker cannot host a file because of a network error. Files marked as Multi-User will not be available over the network. (10048)"

I receive the following error below with FM 7 products.

"FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using FileMaker Pro on this computer"

I was able to host this same file using FM 6 on a 3rd XP laptop and FM 6 Unlimited on a Win 2000 server. I cannot figure out what's different on these machines.

I've turned off windows firewall without success.

FM server isn't installed on the problem laptops.

I ran NETSTAT at the cmd prompt and verified that port 5003 isn't being used by another application.

I've turned on Remote Data Access companion and Local Data Access companion.

I've tried file recovery, that didn't solve the problem.

Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Hi,

for archiving reasons... since the topic is old.

I've been struggeling with the same error now for a while on a Win XP system.

All FileMaker says is, FMServer is running. I run no server, no stuff, still errors.

the only solution for me was te delete ALL filemaker setting in te registry. I have several versions running, perhaps that's the problem...
