I'm planning on going to fm7 from fm6 and also going to fm7 server. I read up on it a bit and have the following questions: Our computers are running either windows 2000 or xp, soon they'll be all xp. I have a separate PC available to be the fm7 server with nothing else on it. Our network is currently Novell 5.0. Our fm6 files are on the Novell server (separate computer) and we access them from there currently. I would want to create my new computer as the fm7 server. Question is, once I install the fm7 server software on the new PC (XP machine), how do I get the files over there - just put it in a directory on the new fm7 server machine? Then, how do i see the files on my PC in my office. I log in through the Novell system on my PC in my office. Does the SAT (I think that's what it was called) set that up for me? Do I have to set anything up on the workstations for this to work? I'm a bit confused. I've used FM since version 1 but never as a server application. Thanks for any help you can give me.

FM7 server will not run on XP. It is only certified for Win 2000 Server and Win 2003 Server. Read the system requirements which are documented with the product (on the box or in the docs).

Once installed and configured for TCP/IP (IPX not supported anymore), yes, you just move your files to the databases directory and open FM7 Server on the server box. The open your FM7 client on any computer on the network and select 'Open Remote...' in the File menu. You should then see your file(s).

If I get win2003 server installed on my xp machine will it all work properly together with my xp workstations, etc.? Will there be a problem that I log on through Novell into workstations? Thanks for the reply.

P.S. By putting files into my db directory, you do mean a directory I create on the fm server machine, right?

One more thing. Will fm server affect any of my fm6 files that are currently running (not via a server)?

I have a server on XP. I have found no issues. I've had it running since the trial was released earlier this summer.

Also, when you upgrade to 7.0, it simply installs a new app. 6.0 is left intact. You can still open your 6.0 files with 6.0. The only thing is that the short cut on the desktop is removed for 6.0. You need to put it back if you want it.

Once you have your files up and running on your server you could create a menu database that will point to your various programs. The local users would open the "menu database" and pick their desired program. You could create an opener file that would open the "menu database". This opener file would be loaded on each user

So you're saying I don't have to purchase ms server 2003. I can just leave it running XP and it'll work?

Great idea. I'll try to implement something like that when I get going. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my 7 file related fm6 db into fm7 one file and multiple tables without buying an external product. We're a school with very limited funding. If you have any ideas on that please refer to my message in the forum about migrating. Thanks again.
