FM7 by default shows numbers in scientific notation, here's a custom function that takes a number to text, but keeping the zeros around. It has an option to add commas every three digits also:

I don't understand why FileMaker doesn't have an option so you can actually choose how to store the data.

I am not sure I understand the problem here. If you enter -4.5e+23 into a Number field, it will be interpreted correctly.
