Incompatibility upgrading from FM 5.5 to FM 7 ???

Hi there,

We are a small company currently running our database on FM PRo 5.5 and FM Server 5.5. We are considering our options of upgrading to FM 7 and Server 7 but have been told that there are several incompatibility issues with FM 7 not being able to read/identify FM 5.5 files.

One person told me that they had a client who did the upgrade and then had to get a developer on site for 100 hours to manually convert all of their files!!!

Can anyone tell me if this is a serious problem. Is it easy to overcome? Is it worth upgrading to FM 7?

Also, as FM 7 can now take any file type, we are wondering whether we could use FM 7 as an internal groupware application to share/edit files that are company related.

I look forward to hearing from someone soon.

FM 7 will not read FM 5 files. You can't import either. You have to dump the data in CSV or merge file format before they can be read by FM 7.

There are lots of threads that talk about upgrading and conversion issues. If any of your users use Win98 they can't run FM 7. Not being a Mac user, I don't know what versions of the OS FM 7 can deal with.

Steve

I must say, I

Agreed. I would add that it would be best to convert the independent FMP 5.5 files first, before the dependent ones.
