I have limited experience with FM6, but am considering using FileMaker Server 7 Advanced for a new project. Before investing time and money for software and equipment, I had a a few general questions that I'm hoping someone will be able to answer. (I wasn't able to find clear answers on the FM site, or from the people at FM.) I would be running everything on a Mac G5 running OSX Server.

I want to publish databases online, make them accessable via web pages, and have the ability for people to add images and documents, in addition to text to the DB via web pages. Would also like to offer the ability to edit information or replace documents via a web page. Can this be done? What topics should I be looking at to accomlish this?

Can I limit the ability to post/edit information to specific users?

I want to host multiple DBs on the same server, and have them accessed via different domains. DB1 accessable only via domain1.com and DB2 only accessable via domain2.com. Can this be done?

Does it make a difference which version of OSX Server I use? 10-user, or unlimited?

Any information that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You can allow users to create new records on the Web database; the records could have text fields and container fields.

Welcome, and yes you can using FM server Advance and custom web publishing leveraging XML & XSLT.

That shouldn't pose a problem your web server will be how ever you setup your static web pages and the link to your custom pages.

Actually you don't need OSX Server the license limitation is only there for LAN WAN clients accessing the file server. You can make due with OS X client. But you may need other tools to make it easier to modify BIND for multiple domains and web directories.

Hope that helps..

Thank you for the information. You just saved me $1000 on OSX server.

This is a basic question, but can I assume that the code of the web pages generated by FM can be customized based on the contents of the DB? Thinking in terms of an online store where the payment code behind PayPal buttons can be modified for specific items based on the contents of the DB. Or something as simple as changing a page background color for different types of items.

I have some studying ahead of me, but looks like FM will do what I need.
