I have four files (layouts, not sure what the right terminology would be) that are online but only one seems to open correctly. All the other ones say "Layout not found: Unable to process your request b/c the layout "21" could not be accessed". Now I have all 4 of the files in the same folder on the server with the same permissions but it makes no sense that only one opens up. Any suggestions?

This gets more interesting by the passing moment. OK here is new problem:

1) I got them to show by taking restrictiokns off like group and passwords out (which makes no sense really).

2) A more important issue is getting the files to be hidden online so the "main" file that allows access to every file is the only one that shows. That still prompts for a password and works fine.

So for example:

I have an Inventory file, Employee file, Contact file, and a main file that has links to the other three. How do I get only the main file to show up online. I tried the multi-user hidden feature which didnt work (that may make sense). Any suggestions?

Howdy! I think if you are using Instant Web Publishing and talking about the default list of databases that are published, you can change the name of the database to have a trailing underscore character and it won't show up in the list, i.e. inventory_.fp5 and what not. I think someone else was able to do do this rename and it did not affect FM's ability to access/find db's via relationships or scripts, but I have not done so myself so cannot verify this.

P.S. I try to leave security for last 'cuz it tends to get in the way of development. Or, at least, you can set the DB to auto-try a password.

Hope this helps some!

OK I will try to explain better if I can:

Online, I have listed for example;

Contacts

Inventory

Employees

I want only Contact to show up so no one accessing the databse online can get into Inventory and Employees directly. I try doing the mutli-user hidden and it still shows up for some reason. Makes no sense. The only way I can have those not show up is if they are closed on the server, but then the links to get to those dont work under contacts so that defeats the purpose.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I am trying them as we speak.

Hey Steve T.

I did that tip with the underscore and it did hide them which is good. But then the links to those layouts dont work when trying to access them. SO half the problem is solved.

Now I am getting other problems:

1) I cant seem to be able to make changes on any of the records online, I gave myself privileges to do that and it still doesnt allow me, I cant even create a new record.

This is just getting frustarting, wasnt filemaker supposed to be "easy" to get online. I donbt believe that anymore. I am going to convert all my files to Filemaker 7 and start over again with web publishing.

Hi, b! FM4-6 Instant Web Publishing was supposed to be quick and easy, and I think it is in a limited sense. To start doing more and to get more control, many of use were using Custom Web Publishing with CDML instead. FM7 is supposed to have a much-improved Instant Web Publishing experience, though.

Personally, I did not like the Access Privileges screen and often got confused with how to set the settings the way I wanted. Once I figured them out, I'd be okay but then I'd forget the next time I had to do somehting and had to waste time figuring it out again.

Just do the security stuff last if you can. Ciao!
